Black Sea River Cruises and the Danube Delta
Where Europe’s great river finally meets the sea.
Get Free Lower Danube QuotesBlack Sea river cruises are the long-form version of the lower Danube: they keep going past Bucharest to the point where Europe’s second-longest river finally reaches the sea.
The Danube Delta
Before it meets the Black Sea, the Danube splits into three main arms — the Chilia, the Sulina and the Sfântu Gheorghe — and a maze of channels, lakes and reed beds. The Romanian part of the delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve, and it is one of the most important wetlands in Europe for birds. Great white and Dalmatian pelicans, herons, egrets and cormorants are the stars; fishing villages and floating reed islands complete the picture.
River cruise lines that include the delta usually dock at Tulcea and transfer guests to smaller boats for a day in the channels. It is a complete change of mood after a week of cities and fortresses.
Constanța and the Romanian Coast
Some Black Sea river cruises end their river journey at Cernavodă and continue to Constanța, Romania’s main port on the Black Sea, via the Danube–Black Sea Canal or by coach. Constanța has Roman roots as the city of Tomis, a mosaic-floored Roman building near the harbor, and an Art Nouveau casino on the seafront. Tauck’s Budapest to the Black Sea program, for example, has included Constanța and the Romanian coast.
Tulcea
Delta gateway and the usual base for boat excursions into the wetlands.
Cernavodă
Where the Danube–Black Sea Canal begins its route to the coast.
Constanța
Black Sea port with Roman history and a seafront promenade.
Bucharest
Often included at the start or end, reached by coach from the Danube.
Are Black Sea River Cruises Right for You?
These are longer trips with more coach time and simpler ports than the classic Danube. They suit travelers who have already sailed the Rhine or upper Danube and want something less familiar, and nature lovers drawn by the delta. For a short first taste of the river, the Passau-to-Budapest stretch is easier; Danube Riverboat Cruises covers it.
Fares for these voyages move with demand and season, so we never print them here. Live offers appear on Cruising for Less and during Wave Season, and Cruise & Travel Insurance explains the cover worth having on a longer, more remote trip.
Black Sea and Delta Questions
Can a river ship sail into the Danube Delta?
Larger European river ships generally stay on the main navigation channels and dock at Tulcea or similar ports. Guests then explore the narrower channels on small excursion boats. Ask how the delta day works on the itinerary you choose.
When is the best time to see birds in the delta?
Spring and early summer are lively, with breeding colonies and migrating birds; late summer and early autumn also bring migration. Birdlife is never guaranteed on a single day, but pelicans and herons are commonly seen.
Do Black Sea river cruises visit the beach?
Not usually. When an itinerary reaches the coast it is typically for Constanța’s history and harbor rather than beach time. If you want sea and sand, add a stay on land afterward.
