A little preparation goes a long way on a route that crosses five countries, three currencies outside the euro and one non-EU border.

Borders and Documents

Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania are all members of the EU and of the Schengen area; Serbia is outside both. When the ship enters and leaves Serbian waters, border officials check passports, usually handled by the crew while you carry on with your day. Make sure your passport is valid well beyond your travel dates and has blank pages. Entry rules for Europe are changing as new digital border systems roll out, so check the State Department’s country pages shortly before you travel.

Seasons and Weather

Departures generally run spring through autumn. July and August can be hot on the Hungarian and Romanian plains, while spring brings green landscapes and early autumn brings harvest season. As on any European river, very high or low water can occasionally change an itinerary; ask each line about its policy.

Choosing a Line and a Ship

Fewer lines sail below Budapest, so choice is narrower than on the Rhine. Compare the length of the voyage, whether Bucharest and the delta are included, how many hotel nights come with it, and the size and style of the ship. The Official Cruise Directory and Official River Cruise Directory help you browse, and our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will compare current sailings for you. If your group is large, ask about block space on a single departure.

Packing for the Lower Danube

  • Comfortable shoes for fortress ramps and cobbled old towns.
  • A light jacket for the windy Iron Gates transit, even in summer.
  • Sun protection and a refillable bottle for hot plains days.
  • Binoculars if your itinerary includes the Danube Delta.
  • A small amount of local cash for markets and tips ashore.

Planning Questions

What currencies will I need?

Hungary uses the forint, Serbia the dinar and Romania the leu. Croatia uses the euro, and Bulgaria adopted the euro on January 1, 2026. Cards are widely accepted in cities; a little local cash helps in small towns and markets.

Is the lower Danube safe to visit?

The countries on this route welcome large numbers of visitors and river cruise excursions are organized and guided. As anywhere, check the State Department advisory for each country before you travel and keep an eye on your belongings in busy places.

What is the sailing season?

Lower Danube departures generally run from spring to autumn. Summer can be hot on the plains; spring and early autumn are milder and good for walking tours.

Will I be able to use my phone?

Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania are in the EU; Serbia is not, and roaming charges can differ there. Check your carrier’s plan before you go.
